What is an LEI?

A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a unique 20-character, alphanumeric code that identifies a legal entity—such as a company, supplier, or government body—participating in financial transactions. Each LEI is tied to verified reference data, including an entity’s name, address, and ownership structure, maintained through the Global LEI System overseen by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF).

For procurement and supplier data teams, LEIs offer a standardized way to confirm supplier identity and untangle corporate hierarchies, reducing the risk of duplicate or mismatched vendor records.
